The Groveland Improvement Company was incorporated in Washington on November 16, 1881 by Hamilton Lipsett, William Church and a group of local businessmen. Based in Dungeness, the company was formed out of need for an improved port for the town, which was located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca just east of Port Angeles.
The company completed a long pier and warehouse facility and also developed the town of New Dungeness.
