1882 Green Wood Cemetery Carriage Service Brochure.  4 1/4" x 6 1/4".  4 pages.  This brochure describes the carriage service offered by the cemetery for lot owners and visitors, with the carriage passing on its route the cemetery's principal monuments and points of interest.  This service was important because visitors could reach their loved ones' gravesites without walking long distances.
The brochure gives a detailed description of the cemetery, which had been chartered in 1838.  The cemetery consisted of 450 acres of land and 20 miles of carriage avenue.  The brochure gives the number of burial lots sold by the close of 1881; it gives details of the cemetery's water supply, which came from Brooklyn City Water Works, and was connected to 57 hydrants; and also 8 lakes with fountains throughout the cemetery.  Described in detail are the magnificent marble and bronze sculptures throughout the cemetery including "Our Savior's Entombment"; The Resurrection and The Raising of Lazarus; a 36 ft. spectacular marble monument to John Matthews, soda fountain king of the mid-19th century; a bronze bust of Horace Greeley; Steinway's tomb, the largest private tomb in the cemetery; Fireman's Monument featuring a fireman holding a child in his arms; "Old Maid's" Plot where five sisters are interred, whose ages ranged between 100 and 117 years, and many others monuments.
